Norwalk Finds Funds for Park, Playground Fixes

Ruby Watkins took the microphone Tuesday night to thank the Common Council for what she called a "turning point" for Ryan Park. "It's a real milestone," she said of the council's planned allocation of $25,000 to put in a water supply for the park.

Jefferson Elementary School parents were also happy. The council approved a nearly $27.8 million capital budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 with some last-minute amendments: money for playgrounds at Jefferson and Wolfpit Elementary Schools as well as funds for Fodor Farm.

Doug Hempstead, chairman of the council's planning committee, said the budget included "the most money we have ever had in paving, $5 million, piggybacked on the amount we had last year," and said it included money for affordable housing as well as permanent improvements to the Westport Avenue Fire Station.

Bobby Burgess also thanked the council for funding a water supply to Ryan Park, singling out Mayor Richard Moccia, Council President Richard McQuaid and Councilman Carvin Hilliard. "I've run water from the hose from Washington Village over to the park," Hilliard said, expressing gratitude for the funding for park improvements.
