NORWALK, Conn. – The Federal Emergency Management Agency has opened a fixed Disaster Recovery Center in Norwalk after Hurricane Sandy, Gov. Dannel Malloy announced Wednesday.
The center, located in Norwalk City Hall at 125 East Ave., is one of eight set up around the state to help residents file claims.
“For residents that were affected by Storm Sandy, these Recovery Centers can be a real asset in navigating the process for receiving aid from FEMA,” Malloy said in a statement. “If you live in one of the declared counties and you suffered damage from Storm Sandy, register with FEMA and visit one of these centers so you can learn what benefits you may qualify for.”
The Norwalk center will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Besides the Norwalk site, FEMA has also set up centers at the Western Greenwich Civic Center, Room 203, 449 Pemberwick Road, Greenwich, and at Housatonic Community College, 900 Lafayette Blvd., Bridgeport. The Greenwich site is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and the Bridgeport site is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
Residents are asked to register with FEMA before visiting the recovery center by either calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or by going online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov. For those with speech or hearing disabilities, the TTY number is 1-800-462-7585.
Additionally, Gov. Malloy’s office also set up a fact sheet on how to apply for FEMA aid at www.ct.gov/sandy.
To date, nearly $6 million in federal disaster assistance has been approved to help individuals with disaster expenses in Connecticut, according to the governor.
