NORWALK, Conn. An illegal immigrant who was living in Norwalk before being taken into custody by Norwalk Police in December will be sent to his native Honduras to face murder charges.
Elim Cerrato, 38, formerly of 39 Meadow St., was taken into custody on Dec. 13 at Lajoie's Auto Parts, said Lt. Timothy Murphy, commander of the detective bureau.
Det. Louie Giannattsio had received a phone call at 9 a.m. that morning from a concerned citizen, who had heard that Cerrato was wanted for murder in Honduras. Giannattsio worked quickly to confirm Cerrato's identity, his illegal status in the United States and his location, Murphy said.
He also contacted Immigration Customs Enforcement Agent Christian Manns. At 12:30 p.m., detectives, patrol officers, special services officers and I.C.E. agents took Cerrato into custody after a brief struggle. He was turned over to I.C.E.
Murphy said he was informed Thursday that Cerrato has an active warrant for the murder of his step-son, which happened in La Colonia, Dulce Nonbre de Qulmia, Honduras, and that he may be wanted for other violent crimes in Honduras. Cerrato is in I.C.E. custody and is awaiting transfer to Honduras.
