The project, part of the work that must be completed before the bridge itself is replaced beginning in 2018, is anticipated to cause only minimal impacts to the navigable river channel below the bridge.

The cost of the project is estimated at $800,000. The work is scheduled to be complete in the fall.

No traffic impacts are anticipated as a result of the repairs.

The bridge, which carries four New Haven Line railroad tracks over the Norwalk River, swings open and closed to accommodate commercial and private marine traffic on the river.

The project will replace deteriorated portions of the existing fender system, including the installation of new timber support piles and new horizontal timber bracing.

Recent difficulties with the bridge suggest that upgrades can’t come soon enough.

On Saturday, May 28, delays of up to 90 minutes occurred along the New Haven Line for much of the day when the bridge failed to close properly.

The following Friday, June 3, mechanical problems caused additional delays of up to an hour.

The fender system repairs are expected to have a negligible impact on area residents, though noise from barge mounted equipment in the river is expected.

In-water construction activities will include the demolition of the deteriorated portions of the existing fender system and installation of the new timbers.

The work will be carried out during the evening, with nighttime hours on week nights.

Construction equipment will be positioned in the east channel during work hours, and will be moved off site each day.

Pre-construction activities will take place during daytime hours.

The work is being carried out in compliance with U.S. Coast Guard mandates.
