FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- A U.S. Air Force sergeant from Fairfield County has been killed in Afghanistan, Gov. Dannel Malloy announced, ordering flags to half-staff in the man's honor.
Staff Sgt. Todd "TJ" Lobraico, a New Fairfield resident, was killed in action Thursday in Afghanistan, Malloy's office said in a statement. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Staff Sgt. Lobraico. His family and friends are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time,” said Malloy. “This loss reminds us of the dangers faced by our men and women stationed overseas. We should all be grateful for their service and sacrifices to our country.”
Lobraico, 22, was a member of the New York Air National Guard and 2008 graduate of New Fairfield High School.
“The loss of this brave young man is a sad reminder that hundreds of Connecticut military men and women are still in danger overseas even as our involvement in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan approaches a conclusion,” said Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman. “I hope that all Connecticut residents take a moment to recognize the sacrifice in defense of our freedom made by Airman Lobraico and the other 64 heroes from our state lost in battle since Sept. 11, 2001.”
Flags will fly at half-staff until burial, details of which were not released.
A report at WTNH-TV's website said Lobraico's father is a police officer in Stamford.
The Defense Department website did not yet include any information on Lobraico's death.
