Enigma Cafe on Van Zant street is back in the liquor business. The Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr., suspended its liquor license last January, after a dangerous fight in the cafe that spilled out onto the sidewalk (gunshots, knives). The cafe has been the scene of many fights, as well as underage drinking.
In consultation with the police department, Farrell imposed a long list of conditions. The cafe is required to have better security procedures, clearly identified security personnel, many video cameras, metal detectors and criminal background checks of all employees. Patrons of the bar have to comply with a dress code that specifically bans do-rags, too-loose clothing and clothing with gang insignias. After six months, Enigma may petition the Liquor Commission for changes to some or all of the conditions.
