NORWALK, Conn. An elderly Norwalk woman who was rescued last month by Norwalk firefighters from a burning Maple Street apartment has died.
Marjorie Johnson, 92, died of respiratory failure, smoke inhalation and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a spokesperson for the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington said. The death has been classified as "accidental."
Johnson's daughter, Judy O'Brien, 62, also died from injuries sustained during the Jan. 31 fire at the Sheffield Ridge Condominium complex, located at 45 Maple St. near Norwalk Hospital. The fire started at 4:19 a.m.
Both women were unconscious when firefighters arrived at their unit, Apt. 4C, fire officials said.
Damage was confined to their apartment. Fire Marshal Glenn Iannacone said O'Brien, who died two days after the fire, fell asleep in bed while smoking. Her bedclothes caught fire. She also was using an oxygen tank due to a health condition, he said.
