East Norwalk residents living near South Smith Street should brace for a noisy start to April. That's when work begins on the new sewage treatment plant expansion. The upgrade, which has been in the works for years, got the official go-ahead with state funding last October.
The Norwalk Water Pollution Control Authority oversees more than 180 miles of pipes and 22 pumping stations that bring sewage for treatment before discharging it into the Norwalk River. Updates on sewage treatment are available at the WPCA website.
The work starts phase one of the upgrade at a cost of $37.1 million. The project was funded from the Connecticut's Clean Water Fund, as part of the mission to improve the water quality of the Long Island Sound. When completed, the Norwalk plant will be state-of-the-art and one of the best in Connecticut. The progress of the work can be viewed on a live web cam here.
