Couple Hit Child With Belt, Phone Cords, Norwalk Police Say

A couple is behind bars after allegedly beating a child with a belt and other abuses.

Fairfield County residents Jose Valenzuela, 35, and Liseth Castillo-Cruz, 31, both of Danbury, were arrested on Wednesday, Feb. 26, on arrest warrants following an investigation that began in January, said the Norwalk Police.

According to police, the Special Victims Unit received a complaint on Jan. 16, of child abuse from the Connecticut Department of Child and Family. 

Det. Tim Marquis began investigating the allegation of abuse and during an interview learned that the child had allegedly been struck with a belt on multiple occasions by the victim’s mother and her boyfriend, police said.

 It was also reported that the child had been struck with a phone cord wire and was made to hold books over their head until it hurt as a form of punishment, police said.

Detectives located Valenzuela and Castillo-Cruz at separate locations in Danbury. Both were arrested and transported back to the Norwalk Police Department where they were charged.

Valenzuela was charged with risk of injury to a child, cruelty to persons and assault. He is being held on a $100,000 bond.

Castillo-Cruz was charged with the risk of injury to a minor and cruelty to a person. She is being on a $75,000 bond.
