Toddlers Enjoy Their Own Computers

South Norwalk Branch Library invites pre-schoolers to visit the library and enjoy computers designed just for them. The "toddler computers" are located right inside the door of the children’s room and offer colorful, extra-large keyboards and monitors that look like stuffed animals. Sherelle Harris, who heads the South Norwalk branch, said the computers are intended for children under the age of seven and come loaded with educational software but have no Internet access. Synfeni Boyd, 4, is a "regular," Harris said.

“We wanted a space where the younger children wouldn’t have to compete for a computer with the older kids,” said Harris. Each computer averages about 100 users a month. The library’s goal, she said, is to expose Norwalk’s youngest children to computers while also supporting their early learning skills.

Library guidelines ask parents to sit with their children as they become proficient with the computers and the software. Synfeni spent her visit enjoying a Sesame Street program with her mother’s help, Taka Raginnon. Synfeni visits the library each week, her mother said, to use the computers and borrow books.
