“I’m so happy I don’t know what to say,” Helen Palmer told the Daily Voice shortly before she celebrated her day with friends and family. “I’m at a loss for words believe it or not.”

Palmer’s family said they expected about 100 people to attend her birthday party Saturday. And even those who couldn’t make it were calling to wish Palmer a happy birthday from all over.

Palmer has many happy memories from her days in the city, including how she hosted the first foreign exchange student in Norwalk. The student, who was from the Philippines, was just another member of the family.

“She fit right in,” Palmer said, adding that she and the former student are still in touch.

For her birthday, Palmer also received an official citation from the Connecticut Senate and one from Gov. Dannel Malloy.

Palmer, who was happy to be celebrating with friends and family, said she is looking forward to the years ahead after he milestone birthday.

“So I’m ending a century and starting a new one,” Palmer said. “No matter how short it is, it’s going to be a happy one.”
