Michael Habif of Norwalk was among the workers loafing Friday morning at Cranbury Park. "I took a day off just to let him run around," he said of his 2-year-old dog, Charley.
Habif wasn't alone. "I'm actually playing a little bit of hooky," said Gail Scheffler of New Canaan. "I needed to take a morning and get out in the snow." She said many people had been in the park, walking their dogs, and she was glad she was in town for the storm. "I missed the last storm, I was sad about it," she said. "I was in California; I was in 65-degree weather and I was so sad because of the snow. I couldn't wait to come back."
Chaundra Hoover was there with her dog, Gracie, an 11-month-old black Lab, who had his first experience with the snow in the recent blizzard. The snow wasn't falling hard yet, and Hoover was looking forward to the afternoon, when there will be "real snow." "I'm optimistic we'll have real snow, 4 to 6 inches," she said.
Habif said he brought Charley out in the middle of the blizzard. "It's the most beautiful time of the year for a dog," he said. "I hope it snows more. My wife is from Western Massachusetts and this is merely a dusting compared to what she's used to."
Habif wasn't worried about shoveling. "That's what four-wheel drive is for," he said.
There were other people in the park, too, who didn't have the excuse of a dog for being out in the falling snow. Mickey Wechter was at the other end of the parking lot, chatting with a friend who had come to the park just to enjoy the snow. "It's nice so far, as long as the wind doesn't kick up," he said. The plumber said the weather wasn't changing his plans much, other than giving his girlfriend a ride because she doesn't like driving in the snow.
