Volt Charges Ahead in Safety Ratings

As if there weren't enough arguments in favor of buying a Chevrolet Volt -- among them, the electric car's low environmental impact and the fact that it walked away with the title of North American International Car of the Year -- here's one more compelling reason to get charged about the 2011 Volt.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety completed its first test of mainstream plug-in vehicles, and both the 2011 Chevrolet Volt and the 2011 Nissan Leaf were named "Good" for their front, side, rear and rollover crash protection. The Volt scored a five-star overall safety rating, the highest-possible score in NHTSA's new (and stricter) safety tests for 2011 model year vehicles.

According to the General Motors website, a comprehensive system of safety features -- StabiliTrak electronic stability control system and multiple air bags among them -- helped the Volt become the first electric vehicle to achieve the five-star rating.
