Food Network traveled the country to determine which local hotspots provide the best overall all-American deli experience in each state.

That tour took them to Gaetano’s Deli, which has locations in Westport, Stratford and Monroe, and a fourth coming to Shelton, earning it the distinction of being the Nutmeg State’s best deli experience.

“Guy Catalano and Milanno Ukehaxhaj worked together at the famous Mike’s Deli on Arthur Avenue before bringing their own Italian-style delicatessen to Stratford, more than two decades ago,” Food Network noted. “The pair have since expanded their operation into three locations to keep up with local demand for Gaetano’s mix of Italian grocery items (including housemade mozzarella) and stuffed breads crammed with pepperoni and cheese, eggplant parm and the like.“

The first Stratford shop was opened more than two decades ago, and the demand was so great for Gaetano products that they had to continue expanding. The Shelton location is expected to open shortly after the Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 2.

Food Network highlights the deli’s selection of panini, which takes up nearly an entire page of the menu, with more than 20 different combinations. Each one starts with Italian bread picked up daily from Addeo’s Bakery in the Bronx, which is then paired with classic deli meats. Options include bresaola, Oldani salami and plenty of Boar’s Head varieties.

“The Greatest Italian Deli in the USA, in my opinion!! We have been faithful customers in Stratford since my son discovered it while he was in high school in 2000,” one customer said. “Love the food: hero’s and catering; the service and especially the personal touch. Milano, Guy and especially Angelo, who is so attentive to our every order in Stratford. Recognition well deserved.”
