“Personal Statement” is the first novel by Emmy-nominated writer and producer Jason Odell Williams, who was recently optioned for a film by former Miramax executives, according to Fairfield blog fairfieldista. Williams reportedly chose Greenwich as the setting of his story, but changed it to a fictionalized town after the first draft was read by his publishers.
“Although this is realistic contemporary fiction, it’s also a satire and there’s a heightened sense to the characters and place … so setting it in a real town we felt would take away from that heightened sense and the satire,” Williams was quoted as saying. “Also – in a strange way I think setting it in a fictional town makes it more universal. It’s not ONE specific town … it’s every-town.”
In "Personal Statement" the book's description says "it’s open season on admissions—and a Category-3 hurricane is headed for Connecticut. Self-proclaimed tiger-daughter Emily Kim drags her best friend, apathetic test-taking genius Rani Caldwell, to the coastal town of Cawdor, where Emily’s sure her humanitarian efforts will make her Harvard application stand out from the pack. Problem is: so does everyone else."
Williams is scheduled to appear at the Westport Library to discuss the book on Oct. 1 from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
