NORWALK, Conn. -- It's wine-thirty at Basso Cafe Restaurant & Wine Bar in Norwalk.

Here, Chef Renato Donzelli, who was granted his liquor license late last year, has a new wine cellar and refurbished bar area. The intimate bar now offers a superior selection of signature cocktails, winter sangrias and craft beers, along with a diverse selection of wine varieties which have been chosen from across Europe, North and South America.

Expect, too, a new "Happy Hour Food and Drinks Menu," which can be enjoyed at the bar Tuesday through Friday between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 pm. Sip and socialize over a Chili Crush (Jalapeno cilantro muddle with green chili vodka and triple sec), the signature Basso Martini (Organic lemon vodka, lemongrass, simple syrup, with a lemon twist) or a Basso Old Fashioned (Cherry and orange muddled with Bulleit Bourbon, blended with bitter truth).

A selection of bar bites currently includes Melanzane Sott’olio (grilled eggplant preserved with virgin olive oil, balsamic and oregano served over crostini) Boquerones a la Vinagreta (white anchovies, served with shallots-champagne vinaigrette) and Chorizo Casserole (with chickpeas and roasted peppers). Overall, dishes are traditional Mediterranean but with Latin influences.

Donzelli, who grew up in Caracas but now lives in town, was recently named “Most Innovative Chef” at the 2015 Greenwich Wine and Food Festival. He said he is passionate about food and wine pairings and never stops creating.

For the those who got used to bringing their own wine, no worries: Basso will continue to offer BYOB of one bottle of wine per table with a $25 corkage fee.

Basso is located at 124 New Canaan Ave., (203) 354-6566,
