The health department recommends people take the following steps to protect themselves from the risk of the flu: "Wash your hands often with soap and water, cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough, stay home if you feel sick, and get your flu shot from the Norwalk Health Department," according to a press release.

The following is a schedule of the Norwalk's Health Department community flu clinics that are open to the public:

Tuesday, Oct. 1, 5 to 7 p.m. Norwalk Health Department, 137 East Ave.

Thursday, Oct. 3, 10 a.m. to noon. St. Mary’s Church Hall, 669 West Ave.

Tuesday, Oct. 8 10 a.m. to noon. St. Philip’s Church Hall 25 France St.

Thursday, Oct. 10, 5 to 7 p.m. Norwalk Health Department, 137 East Ave.

For those who cannot attend the community clinics listed, the department has walk-in hours on Mondays from noon to 4 p.m., starting Oct. 7, according to the release.

"The flu vaccine protects against seasonal and H1N1 flu, and anyone older than 6 months of age is encouraged to get their flu shot," according to the release. "All clients should try to wear short sleeves for easy access to the injection site."

Flu shots through the Health Department are covered by Medicare Part B, ConnectiCare, and Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield, according to the release. Residents with insurance coverage are asked to bring all insurance cards for verification of benefits, with the standard seasonal flu shots cost at $25 per person.
