You know that early detection is key to surviving breast cancer. That's why you never miss a mammogram appointment (or fail to remind your wife, sister, or mother to go to the doctor). What you might not know is that a thermogram can spot cancerous activities up to eight years before a mammogram, without the radiation or discomfort.
Fairfield resident and Certified Clinical Thermographer Suzanne Pyle is determined to spread the word about what she considers one of the most important developments in cancer research ever. Were really saving lives, she says. By the time a tumor shows up on a mammogram, its often too late.
Thermograms dont actually look for tumors, they spot what comes first: the growth of new blood vessels. Also known as Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging, this FDA- approved method uses a special camera to measure patterns of heat emitted from the body. In a picture, pre-cancerous blood cells show up as higher in temperature than surrounding breast tissue. Women as young as 30, an age group not traditionally advised to get regular mammograms, visit Suzanne--especially if they have a family history of breast cancer.
When you can see years in advance if youre at risk, then youre able to make changes in your diet and lifestyle. You dont necessarily have to get cancer at all, says Suzanne, who has a background in nutrition and counsels her patients on supplements and foods that can help balance estrogen levels. She was an aerobics dance instructor before she was a nutritionist, So Ive been involved in womens health for a long time."
