The event, which will take place on Saturday, Dec. 20, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Fire Headquarters at 121 Connecticut Ave. is to collect new toys and gifts for children in need. The doors open at 3:30 p.m. and the movie should start at about 4 p.m. The cost of admission is a new toy/gift or gift card.

“With the hectic holiday schedules many families have this time of year, this is a great way for people to relax together, enjoy a movie and make a difference, “ said Fire Chief Denis McCarthy. “Almost 150 new children enter the foster care system the week leading up to Christmas, while the five fire stations have been collected toys in recent weeks, this event will help ensure every child will have a gift.

McCarthy also serves on the HSC Board of Directors.

While guests are getting settled in to watch the movie, the department will share fire safety and winter preparedness materials, as well as popcorn and hot cocoa.

”This movie is popular with people of all ages, so everyone is welcome to attend, just please bring a gift, book or toy. The apparatus bay floor is heated, just bring a blanket or towel to sit on.” added McCarthy.

The Connecticut Department of Children and Families and other Norwalk agencies provide 3,500 individual holiday wishes collected from the children they serve. These children have been abused, neglected and/or are at-risk, many of whom live in foster care or group homes and are struggling with frightening and unclear futures. For some of these children, this is the only gift they will receive.

Residents who wish to donate a gift, but can’t attend the event, can stop at any of the five fire stations in the city. For questions about this event, contact 203-854-0238 or mdeluca@norwalkct.org.
