The program will be offered during the school vacation week of April 13 to 17 and will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
These programs invite younger students ages 6 to 8 to explore a different topic each day centered around our watery world, while children ages 9 to 12 can dabble in the activities of a real marine biologist, from fish dissections to aquarium set-up and maintenance.
For children ages 6 to 8 each daily adventure will be full of animal encounters, age-appropriate crafts and hands-on activities and experiments that make learning fun. The daily schedule and topics are:
- Monday, April 13 – “Whale of a Day.”
- Tuesday, April 14 – “Turtle Town.”
- Wednesday, April 15 – “Sound Art.”
- Thursday, April 16 – “Shark Safari.”
- Friday, April 17 – “Blue Planet.”
For children ages 9 to 12, the program is Junior Marine Biologist. In this five-day program, students get involved in the inner workings of the aquarium’s animal-husbandry staff. This adventurous program is focused on setting up, stocking, feeding and maintaining an aquarium display of Long Island Sound marine life.
By taking this program in April, participants will be eligible to sign up for the more-advanced “Junior Marine Biologist 2” and “3” programs offered this summer.
The Maritime Aquarium also offers other opportunities for children during the spring-break week, such as a family visit. All exhibits will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., including the new “Dragons” exhibit, starring a rare black dragon; and “Jiggle A Jelly,” where guests can safely touch live jellyfish.
To accommodate parents’ busy schedules, the aquarium offers pre-care from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at a cost of $20 additional per day or $85 for the week and post-care from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at a cost of $40 per day or $170 for the week.
No matter the child’s age, the cost of a “Spring Vacation Adventures” program is $100 per day or $450 for the full week. Maritime Aquarium members discount costs are $90 per day or $400 for the week.
Space is limited and advance registration is required. Since the Aquarium is a Connecticut state-certified camp, health-exam forms for every child enrolled are required.
