Newtown Police Warn Of IRS Scam

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- Newtown police are warning residents of an IRS scam after a resident reported that she had received several harassing calls, allegedly from the IRS.

Newtown police are warning residents that callers pretending to be from the IRS have called a residents threatening arrest if they didn't respond to the call.

The woman told officers that the caller left messages on her home phone stating that a warrant would be issued for her arrest if she didn't respond to the calls. The telephone numbers were 202-864-0110 and 612-469-9547, according to police. However, Newtown police said scammers use many different numbers. 

The department is urging resident to simply hang up or ignore this type of call. The IRS never contacts residents by phone and threatens arrest.
