The resident said the caller claimed he was collecting money for the Newtown Police K9 Unit and would personally pick up the money himself at a prearranged place and time, police said.
The Newtown Police said in a statement that is is currently not engaged in any fundraising efforts.
The Newtown Police Detective Division said it has developed leads with the assistance of a legitimate fundraising company that represents the Connecticut Police Work Dog Association and solicits for this association.
The investigation is concentrating on an employee of this legitimate company who is using inside knowledge to commit fraud, police said.
