The incident took place around 3 p.m., Wednesday, May 22, when Stephen Kovzel, of Oxford, got out of his vehicle in the parking lot of the Oxford Liquor Shoppe, at 19 Oxford Road, state police said.

While getting out of the vehicle it began to roll backward and hit another vehicle in the parking lot. The driver of the hit vehicle, a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado, moved his vehicle backward after being hit, allowing the Jeep to continue to roll backward as Kovzel was caught by the door and was run over, state police said.

The Jeep then continued to roll until it finally came to a rest in the northbound lane of Oxford Road against a steel guardrail, state police said.

Kovzel suffered serious injuries to his arms and left leg and was taken to Waterbury Hospital by Oxford EMS.

The accident report said the crash was caused by Kovzel by “unsafe backing.”

The other driver, Mark Reilly, of Beacon Falls, was also issued a summons and charged with evading responsibility and operating a motor vehicle without a license, insurance and expired registration.

Reilly was released after posting a $500 surety bond and is scheduled to appear in court on  May 31.

State police said the incident is still under investigation.
