Heavy smoke was coming from the garage of the home at Fir Tree Lane and Berkshire Road when firefighters arrived from all five fire companies in Newtown along with members of the Southbury Fire Department, NBC 30 said.

An elderly woman who lives in the home made it to the back door, where the passing firefighter was able to help her to safety, NBC Connecticut said.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries battling the blaze in the garage, which was destroyed along with a car, NBC Connecticut said.

The home sustained some heat and smoke damage, and the family is temporarily displaced, NBC 30 said.
