Applicant Sues Bethel Zoning Commission After Crematorium Rejected

BETHEL, Conn. -- Most thought the matter was put to rest when the Bethel Planning and Zoning Commission denied a request to build a crematorium and then banned that type of business altogether, according to newstimes.com.

But for applicant Shawn McLoughlin, the issue is back on the table as he filed two lawsuits this week against the commission, one for rejecting his proposal and another for reversing an earlier decision that had opened the door to crematoriums in town, reported newstimes.com.

The commission denied the request after a large number of nearby business owners and residents threatened to move out of town if the plan was approved, said newstimes.com.

Planning and Zoning Director Steve Palmer said the reversal was out of the ordinary, but not unheard-of and that the commission intends to defend its decision, reported newstimes.com.
