NEWTOWN, Conn. -- A Newton nurse has been chosen to represent Connecticut as the state finalist in a nationwide contest.
Maddy Allen, who works at Newtown's Head O'Meadow Elementary School, was nominated for "always being available to tend to a scraped knee, chapped lips, or a broken heart, and caring for all children as if they were her own" as part of the quest for "America's Greatest School Nurse."
The online submission reveals "she can often be found at five in the evening updating charts, making phone calls, or emailing. She knows every family and advocates for their needs.
"Following a major school tragedy, Maddy's professionalism and compassion were evident, even as her caseload greatly increased. Maddy's expertise in diagnosing and treating both visible and invisible wounds with skill, dignity, and comfort earned her the trust and respect of the entire school community."
Voting ends Sunday, April 16. Go to www.AmericasGreatestSchoolNurse.com/.
Nurses were nominated via an online entry form and judged for their passion and ways they've made a personal impact on students. The contest is sponsored by Children’s Advil, Children’s Robitussin and Children’s Dimetapp.
The winner will receive an ultimate summer vacation.
