NEW CANAAN, Conn. — New Canaan High School graduate and professional baseball player Curt Casali has been traded by the Detroit Tigers to the Tampa Bay Rays, the Detroit News reports.
“Thank you to the Tigers for giving me the opportunity to play professionally. But looks like the Rays are my new team!” Casali tweeted Monday afternoon.
The Tigers sent the minor league catcher to the Rays to retain the rights to Rule 5 draft pick pitcher Kyle Lobstein, the report said.
In two seasons in the minors, Casali hit 12 home runs and 34 doubles and drove in 59 runs, according to Baseball-Reference.com. He was drafted out of Vanderbilt University in the 10th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball amateur draft.
Casali was quarterback of the New Canaan High football team in 2006 when the Rams won the first of four state championships in a row. He also was a part of the conference champion baseball team the following spring.
