Olympic Rower From New Canaan Among Sports Night Honorees

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan rower Charlie Cole, who won a bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in London, will be among the honorees Monday at the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame night at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich.

Cole will be honored as New Canaan’s Sports Person of the Year. Several other Fairfield County athletes, coaches and teams will be honored as the Sports Person of the Year in their communities. Greenwich’s Sue Merz will be among six people enshrined in the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame.

Cole, who began rowing at Maritime Rowing Club under Yan Vengerovskiy in Norwalk, won a bronze medal with the Men’s Four at the Summer Olympics. It was the first U.S. medal in the Men’s 4 since the Summer Olympics in 1992 in Barcelona.

Cole rowed for New Canaan Crew under Vengerovskiy before heading to Yale. He was also on the rowing team at Oxford.

Cole, 26, has not ruled out a run at making the U.S. Olympic team in 2016. “We put in a lot of hard work since last year,” he said shortly after winning the bronze medal, according to the USRowing website. “We’re young guys, and we have a lot to look forward to and we’ll have to think about and reflect on our performance and let the dust settle. But we have a lot to be confident about, and hopefully, a lot to look forward to in our rowing careers.”

Tickets are still available for the dinner, which begins at 6 pm. For information contact Tom Chiappetta at 203-984-4806 or
