New Canaan Synchronized Swimmers Shine in Buffalo

NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- New Canaan YMCA Aquianas Synchronized Swimming team members had strong showings at the East Zone Age Group and Intermediate Championship in Buffalo, N.Y. earlier this month. 

The competition included 247 swimmers from 14 teams throughout New England and the Northeastern United States.

The 11/12 Age group brought two teams of eight swimmers each. Katie Chidley, Katherine Connolly, Eileen Flynn, Brooke Glatzhofer, Audrey Millar, Katherine Reiter, Emma Tchakmakjian and Eliza Wetmore finished third. The team of Claire Batchelor, Olivia Buckley, Larsen Klein, Katie Lydon, Sophie Price, Maddie Sturcke, Julia Tong and Victoria Walters took sixth. In the trio event Chidley, Flynn and Wetmore earned second place. Seventh place went to the trio of Reiter, Rachel Panzano and Olivia Weiss. In the duet event, second place went to Chidley and Connolly, followed closely by Glatzhofer and Wetmore, who finished third. Millar and Batchelor finished sixth. 

In the solo event Connolly and Tchakmakjian placed first and fifth, respectively. In the compulsory figures event, first place went to Connolly and ninth to Wetmore. Connolly was named to the East Zone 11/12 Age Group All Star Team.

The small contingent of the Aquianas 13/15 age group athletes who attended this meet represented the team well, placing first in every event they entered. Gold medals went to the trio of Ashley Evans, Katherine Greco and Sierra Rojas-Thomas, the duet of Greco and Rojas-Thomas and the solo of Lauren Laporta. Rojas-Thomas received another gold in the figures event, followed closely by Evans in third, Laporta in fourth and Greco in fifth.

“After the great performance at this meet, we are excited for these athletes to bring their strong routines to the National Age Group Competition later this month,” said assistant coach Krista Bessinger. Age Group Nationals will be June 22-30 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. 

The 10 and under Intermediate Team of Nina Robbe, Eva Spangler, Kate Glatzhofer, Emma Reiter, Alexandra Orpanos, Jacqueline Prata, Emma Greco took home the gold medal. Third place went to the trio of Glatzhofer, Orphanos and Greco. In the duet event, first place went to Robbe and Spangler and fourth to Glatzhofer and Reiter. In the solo event, Spangler earned first, Robbe second and Prata sixth. In the compulsory figures, event Robbe placed second, Spangler third, Orphanos ninth and Reiter 10th.

The 11/12 Intermediates continued the trend of high scores. The trio of Nicole Vanderlee, Rory Washecka and Valentina Londono earned second place. Duet partners Washecka and Londono earned sixth place. Vanderlee brought home gold in the solo event and placed seventh in figures. 

The 13 and over Intermediate team was filled out with the 11/12 Intermediates swimming up. In the team event, Pamela Chajon and Jessica Moss were joined by Vanderlee, Washecka and Londono to place sixth. Duet partners Chajon and Moss took fifth. Moss earned first place in solo and 11th in figures.
