NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- The New Canaan Running Club hosted Wilton and New Fairfield in a youth cross country meet at Waveny Park on Wednesday.

The young runners are coached by Bill Martin, the cross country and track and field coach at New Canaan High School. The team is sponsored by New Balance New Canaan. New Canaan had 19 boys and 14 girls in Wednesday’s race.

Wilton won the boys and girls events. New Canaan took second in the girls race, and finished one point behind second-place New Fairfield in the boys race. For a New Canaan team that is running only its third season, and its first under coach  Martin. The New Canaan girls were led by Kaitlyn Popson with a fourth place finish, and Christian Meier led the New Canaan boys with a second  place finish.

The other New Canaan runners in the boys race were Bart Codd, Clete Wheeler, Henry Sparkman, Henry Asker, William Dooley, James Hirai, Dylan Wietfeldt, Alec Thomson, Alex Rashad, Jack Cutler, William Stallings, Matthew Sandor, Abe Wheeler, Ted Holahan, Ryan Marney, Cole Prochilo, Max Fonss and Peter Harvey.

Girls who raced included Katilyn Popson, Cali Brannan, Megan Waldron, Emma Wheeler, Cameron Blair, Dixie D’Amelio, Heather Bjerke, Skular Bennett, Catherine Koennecke, Riley Wilson, Caroline Kiesling, Reagan Mushkin, Julianne Jones and Abby Thomas.
