New Canaan Rower Reaches U.S. Finals

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – New Canaan rower Andrew Campbell took a step toward earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic team, while the dream apparently died for Rowayton’s Brian de Regt in the USRowing selection events Wednesday in Chula Vista, Calif.

Campbell, who rowed for New Canaan Crew out of Maritime Rowing Club in Norwalk, and teammate Will Daly won the second semifinal in the lightweight doubles scull. They posted the fastest time in the semifinals, and will row in Thursday’s final.

De Regt, competing with John Graves of Cincinnati, finished third in the first semifinal. Only the top two crews advanced to the final. Tom Paradiso and Robert Duff took second in 6:44.097, followed by de Regt and Graves in 6:44.163.

Campbell’s work is not yet done. He and Daly need to win Thursday’s final to advance to the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in May. The winner of Thursday’s race needs to finish in the top two in the final qualifier, scheduled for May 20-23 in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Westport native Richard Klein also failed to advance in the lightweight doubles scull. Klein and Todd Mickelson finished fourth in the second semifinal. Klein is a former rower at Saugatuck Rowing Club and is now a coach at the GMS Rowing Center in New Milford with Wilton’s Guenter Beutter.

The lightweight doubles final will be streamed live at 12:30 p.m. Thursday by USRowing.
