NEW CANAAN, Conn. The cast may change, but for the seventh straight year the rowers from New Canaan Crew returned from the U.S. Youth Nationals with a medal. Just like last year, this years squad earned gold.
The team of Jonathon Rosow, Alex Buck, Peter Tortora and Graham Mink won the Mens Youth 4x Grand Final at the national meet earlier this month in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The title was the second straight victory in the race for Rosow, a senior who will continue his rowing career at Columbia. He was part of the crew that won gold in the same race last year with Charlie Campbell, Henry Franco and Scott Yanoff.
This may be the most experienced group of boys we have ever sent to nationals, said Coach Yan Vengerovskiy, who trains the team out of Maritime Rowing Club in Norwalk.
Buck will continue his rowing career at Penn, while Tortora will head to Yale. Mink, who will be a senior at St. Lukes, will return next year for the New Canaan team.
Other crews that competed at the U.S. Youth Nationals for New Canaan included Bea Tobey and Vernoica Hoeft, who finished second in the Petit Final and seventh overall in the Womens Lightweight Double; Ned Berman, Carson West, Sam Wiley and Billy Curley, and cox Ashwini Rao who finished 14th overall in the Mens Lightweight 4; Geoff Cloud, Tucker Klutey Alex Mauboussin and Steven Gerasimoff, who were 14th overall in the Mens Youth 4x; and Alex Richmond, Jack Winslow, Alex Vernon, Evan Turiano, Luke Thompson, Billy Curley, Eddy Nilan, Merritt Cullman and cox Frankie Hogan, who took third in the C final of the Lightweight 8 and 15th overall.
