New Canaan Boys Lacrosse Falls to Rival Darien

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The New Canaan boys lacrosse team failed to stop its undefeated rivals as Darien trounced them 13-3 on Tuesday.

New Canaan held Darien in check during the first quarter. Henry West struck first for Darien in the first minute, but John Brainard netted a goal for New Canaan to tie the game, 1-1.

The game got away from New Canaan in the second quarter. Darien held possession of the ball for most of the quarter, and New Canaan was unable to get around its defense. West scored twice more during the quarter, and Bobby Weaver added another goal for Darien with less than a second left in the half.

The Rams were scoreless again in the third quarter, as Darien blocked attempts by Peter Kraus and Brainard. Case Matheis scored twice in the third for Darien, followed by a goal from Tim Murphy.

Matheis took the game away from New Canaan in the fourth quarter, scoring three times in the first two minutes. Brendan Hathaway also scored for Darien, before Peter Richardson quickly returned for New Canaan’s second goal.

New Canaan didn’t give up, though. After Sean Foley and James Kerr scored twice more for Darien, the Rams put up an intense scramble in the final two minutes before finally scoring their final goal with 28 seconds left on the clock.

The loss takes the Rams’ record to 3-3. They will play Staples on Saturday at New Canaan High School.
