New Canaan-Based Team Wins Regional Diving Title

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The Whirlwind Diving team of the New Canaan YMCA captured the team title at the USA Diving Region 2 Summer Championships earlier this month at SUNY-Purchase in Purchase, N.Y.

Whirlwind won the team title with 257 points. The team also finished first in the men’s division with 162 points, while the girls were fourth in the women’s division.

Whirlwind was led by Stamford’s Sean Burston, who won the 1- and 3-meter titles in the boys 16-18-year-old division. Other divers who competed for Whirlwind included New Canaan’s Anne Farley, Kylie Towbin, Cameron Rhind, Tom Kalinowski and Bobby Ross; Wilton’s Allie Courtney and Jake Kealy; Darien’s Piper Van Wagenen, Kyla Pech, Timmy Luz, Wiley Schmidt, Owen Stevens, Steven Kreuch, Kyle O’Donnell and Jake Bowtell; Stamford’s Kirsten Parkinson and Rachel Burston; Norwalk’s Kevin Bradley; Greenwich’s Amanda Pyne and Orange’s Genevieve Angerame.

Whirlwind was also the top team at the Spring Nationals and Y Nationals. The team is coached by Joe Somma, assisted by Allison Coleman and Adam Genuario.  “I am really proud of the hard work of each member of the team,’’ Somma said. “I look forward to Zones where the kids can really show off their skills. Last year, the team took second at Zones. We are heading in strong this year and the top title is within reach."
