Breaking News: 3 Hospitalized After Fire Breaks Out At Residence In Fairfield County

Late Rally Drives New Canaan Baseball Over Darien

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The New Canaan High School baseball team scored one win Wednesday, but its opponent suffered two losses.

New Canaan won 4-2 over rival Darien High, which lost shortstop Thomas Carruthers, who broke his finger in the bottom of the first inning while diving into second base in an attempted steal.

“It’s such a shame; he’s the nicest kid in the world,” New Canaan head coach Mitch Hoffman said.

Darien struck first in the bottom of the fourth when Spencer Dean singled and moved to second on a groundout by Tucker White. He then scored on a single by Bryan Previte.

In the bottom of the fifth, Alex Yergy singled to right center and stole second. The throw went wide, allowing Yergy to continue to third. He scored on a single by Thomas MacLean.

New Canaan struck back in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Andrew Casali singled up the middle, then moved to second on a single by William Burger. Gordon Jones hit a ground ball to second, but the throw to first was bobbled, allowing Casali to score and Burger to move to third. Daniel Rajkowski hit a hard drive to the second baseman, who stopped the ball but was unable to get it up, enabling Burger to score the tying run.

The Rams put the game away in the top of the seventh when Alex Curto singled and stole second. He then scored on a single by Casey Ouellette, who moved to third on a single by Doug Reilly and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Casali.

“We have a young team, and games like this give us experience to build off of,” said Hoffman said. He praised pitcher J.R. Anderson, with five strikeouts, and catcher Ouellette, who knocked in the winning run.

Hoffman continued, “Ouellette is my guy. He’s been hitting the ball hard all year, and he really comes up when we need him.”
