“None at all,’’ Duplock said when asked whether he was hesitant to run after the Boston tragedy. “If you live in fear of these situations, then the terrorists have achieved their aim. Also it was reassuring that the authorities in Boston were able to track down the suspects so quickly.”
Duplock ran the London race for the first time. Coming so soon after Boston, the atmosphere was “certainly more emotional” than other races, he said.
“I felt there was a determination not let what happened get in the way of a great event,’’ Duplock said. “A period of silence was held immediately before each of the race starts, followed by a huge cheer to show support for Boston. Runners were all provided with a black ribbon, and I saw a lot of flags and posters showing support.”
The experience was memorable for Duplock, who finished in 3:45:02.
“This was my second marathon on behalf of Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, having also completed New York in 2011,’’ he said. “They are a game changing cancer research organization and it makes the run more meaningful when you are able to support such a great cause. Although I now live in Connecticut, London is my home marathon so I really enjoyed the day. I was very happy that I achieved my target of finishing under four hours.”
