3 Generations Of New Canaan Family Finish Triathlon

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The family that swims, bikes and runs together sticks together. That proved true for three generations of athletes from one New Canaan family that competed in the Westport Kiwanis Triathlon on Sept. 9 at Compo Beach.

Luke Stewart, 12, won his age group at the race while his sister, Georgia, celebrated her 10th birthday at the race. They competed with their father, Christian. Their grandmother Beatrix McKane of Long Island also won her age group in the 70-74 age division. Saskia McKane, 16, and Ava McKane, 13, who are cousins of the Stewarts, joined Georgia on a relay team.

“This was my second triathlon, but the first time we did it as a family,’’ Luke Stewart said. “It was great experience. Everybody was cheering for one another.”

Stewart finished the race in 47 minutes and 33 seconds, more than five minutes ahead of his closest competitor. Overall, he finished 35th in a field of 284.

“I was really surprised that I won,’’ Stewart said. “I was just going to have fun and just finish. When I learned I won my age group by five minutes, I was elated.”

Stewart also enjoyed the daily workouts with his family training for the race. “That was good bonding with each other,’’ he said. “That made it more enjoyable. It taught me hard work does pay off.”

The victory aside, competing with other family members made the event poignant for the boy. “It’s something I’ll remember for the rest of my life,’’ he said.
