Breaking News: Wilton Man Found Dead In Garage, Neighbor Charged, Police Say

5 Questions With House Candidate David Bedell

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The Daily Voice sent five questions to each of the candidates running for state office this fall. The following responses are from David Bedell, the Green Party candidate running for state representative from the 125th House District, which includes New Canaan and Wilton.

Bedell, 50, is running for the seat being vacated by retiring Republican Rep. John Hetherington. He works as a teacher and has lived in New Canaan since 1998. Bedell is a member of Teachers Against Prejudice. He lists bicycling as a hobby. He lives with his stepson and two cats. He is running against Republican Tom O'Dea and Democrat Mark Robbins.

The Daily Voice: What are the biggest issues facing the 125th district?

Bedell: Transportation, affordable housing, access to health care.

The Daily Voice: What would you do differently than the retiring Rep. John Hetherington?

Bedell: I would support CT's 1971 Environmental Protection Act in full strength and not vote to weaken it.

I support the reduction of municipal health care costs by allowing towns to buy into the state employee pool.

The Daily Voice: Is Connecticut going in the right or wrong direction?

Bedell: Right direction, but not enough: Building on the CT Green Bank Law, we need to establish a state-owned public bank (like the Bank of North Dakota), which could help provide affordable credit.   Building on the SustiNet and HealthyCT reforms, we need a comprehensive, single-payer plan for all state residents.   Building on the Complete Streets Act, we need to support more transportation choices to reduce dependence on high-input, high-emission automobiles.

The Daily Voice: What would you do to involve your constituents in your decision-making process?

Bedell: Hold general assemblies in the district.

The Daily Voice: Why should people vote for you?

Bedell: A vote for me is a vote for an independent voice.
