Two teens are facing a host of charges in Fairfield County following the investigation into a pair of crashes that happened minutes apart, authorities announced.

At approximately 9 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5, police in New Canaan responded to a pair of motor vehicle crashes that occurred within minutes of each other, both on Old Stamford Road.

Police said that first, a BMW was traveling south on Old Stamford Road before the teen driver lost control, struck two trees, and crashed. Both the driver - who suffered a “significant” leg injury and had to be extricated out of the vehicle - and his passengers were transported by paramedics for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash at the Norwalk ER.

Minutes later, the driver of a Volkswagen also lost control on Old Stamford Road as the vehicle approached the initial crash scene.

According to police, the Volkswagen driver lost control and struck a tree, rolling the vehicle over on its side. No injuries were reported.

Investigators noted that all five individuals - three in the BMW, two in the Volkswagen - are 17 or younger, and their names will not be released.

The investigation led to arrest warrants being issued for the driver of both vehicles, 17-year-old New Canaan residents, were arrested and charged this week.

The driver of the BMW was charged with:

  • Reckless driving;
  • Violating passenger restrictions on who are 16 or 17 years old;
  • Passing in a no passing zone;
  • Risk of injury to a minor;
  • Reckless endangerment.

The driver of the Volkswagen was charged with:

  • Reckless driving;
  • Violating passenger restrictions on who are 16 or 17 years old;
  • Passing in a no passing zone;

Both were released following their arrests on a $20,000 bond with return court dates on Tuesday, Oct. 19.
