Six Hurt In Two-Car Crash In New Canaan As Five Leave Scene

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – A two-car accident that sent six people to the hospital as five others fled the scene Friday night was under investigation by New Canaan police.

A Chevrolet Suburban driven by a 17-year-old Darien boy went through a stop sign on Michigan Road at about 9:20 p.m., police said. The vehicle collided with a Mini Cooper driven by a 22-year-old man from Pound Ridge, N.Y., which had been traveling north on Smith Ridge Road, police said.

The Suburban landed on its roof, though it did not roll over. Four people in the Suburban were found at the scene and five others, all teenagers from Darien, had left the scene. Police contacted the parents of three of the boys who had left and were told they were not hurt. One passenger was found near the scene as he prepared to get into a cab, and another returned to the scene after being contacted by police.

Police said the Suburban's driver, three of his passengers, the Mini Cooper driver and his passenger, a 27-year-old woman from South Salem, N.Y., were taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Alcohol may have played a role in the wreck, New Canaan Police Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said. The investigation was ongoing and charges were pending.
