The home located at 322 Dan’s Highway went up in flames in the afternoon on Saturday, Nov. 16, reports New Canaan Fire Chief Jack Hennessey.

The fire, fueled by high winds, was extinguished to a controlled state with the help of fire crews from Norwalk, Wilton, Pound Ridge, South Salem and other areas, Hennessey said.

“We saw heavy fire on our arrival. The house is located in a non-hydrant area which made it difficult to fight, so we had to call for mutual aid,” said Hennessey. “We laid 4,700 feet of five-inch supply line into a pond on Dan’s Highway to get the water we needed and had at least seven tankers on the scene.”

The second and third floors of the home sustained significant damage and were declared uninhabitable, Hennessey said.

The fire took about 90 minutes to bring under control, but Hennessey said that crews were kept on scene overnight to put out additional hot spots found in the home.

The family was able to escape safely and find a place to stay, and no injuries have been reported.

The New Canaan Fire Marshal’s office and the State Police Fire Marshal have initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire.
