NEW CANAAN, Conn. – A New Canaan woman is facing a larceny charge after being accused of stealing cheese from an Elm Street supermarket, police said.
The store’s manager contacted police Friday to report that someone had taken a package of Brillat-Savarin Bloomy Rind French cheese, valued at $17, from the store. A woman was seen on a store surveillance camera taking the cheese out of a box and putting an empty box back on the shelf, police said.
Serena Benenson, 56, of Richmond Hill Road, was charged Friday with sixth-degree larceny, New Canaan police said.
The store’s manager suspected Benenson of taking a jar of caviar, valued at $125, from the store months earlier, police said. She was not charged in that incident, police said.
Benenson told officers who came to her home that she had made a mistake, police said. Benenson was issued a misdemeanor summons and ordered to appear Thursday in Norwalk Superior Court.
