New Canaan Police Ready For Back-To-School Traffic

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Want to avoid losing $460? The New Canaan Police Department is urging New Canaan residents to be careful and courteous on the roads when schools open next week.

New Canaan Police are expecting traffic on town roads to pick up when the new year at New Canaan Public Schools begins next Tuesday. Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said drivers should plan to leave home a little earlier in advance of traffic as yellow buses return to the roads to pick up and drop off students at the public schools and St. Aloysius School, St. Luke’s School and New Canaan Country School will resume classes on Sept. 5.

“The school buses alone will set you back along with the increased traffic,” Ogrinc said.

Town police will increase presence on town roads in marked and unmarked cars to target motorists who exceed the speed limit, use their cell phones while driving and who pass school buses stopped to collect or release children. Drivers who pass stopped school buses will receive a ticket and a fine of $460. New Canaan Police ticketed several drivers for violating that rule.

“Prepare to stop when the amber lights go on and the stop sign comes out,” she said. “The kids’ safety is our biggest concern.”
