New Canaan Police Probing Car Burglaries

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – A pair of car burglaries reported last week appear to be connected, according to New Canaan Police Sgt. Carol Ogrinc.

A woman on Shagbark Drive reported to police at 8:25 a.m. Friday that someone had entered her car that was parked in a driveway and stole a pair of Gucci sunglasses and a case valued at $300. A second car parked in the same driveway was also entered, but nothing was taken, police said. Both vehicles were unlocked.

An iPod music player was reportedly stolen overnight Friday from a vehicle on Butler Lane belonging to a 61-year-old man, police said. The music player was in the vehicle’s glove compartment. The man suspects someone entered his unlocked car sometime between 10 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. Friday, police said.

Ogrinc said the larcenies are possibly connected given the time frame in which they reportedly occurred and the proximity of the homes.

Ogrinc said residents should always lock their car doors, even if they are parked in a driveway. Residents should also contact police if they see a vehicle they’ve never seen before traveling in their area, she said.

The following items were also reported by the New Canaan Police Department:

Vandalism: Police said someone used a black marker to vandalize equipment at South School. A school employee told police Sept. 5 that someone had written the words “HK or DIE” on several park benches outside of the school and had drawn the letters “HK” on a glass backboard. No value was given for how much it will cost to clean the backboard and benches, police said.

Larceny: Police are looking for someone who stole a chipper shredder vacuum machine from a New Lane home. A Locust Avenue man reported Monday that someone had taken his Salsco machine, valued at $9,640, from the land at New Lane sometime in the past two weeks. The machine, last seen Aug. 31, has to be transported on a trailer attached by a hitch, police said.
