New Canaan Police Probe Possible Paving Scam

NEW CANAAN, Conn. — A Main Street resident who wanted to have his driveway paved has found himself embroiled in a possible scam, New Canaan police said.

The man asked a worker who he thought was with a construction company for an estimate to pave his driveway, police said. The company was doing a major paving job on Main Street on July 27 when the man approached the worker. But police said the worker was a temporary flagman who was not affiliated with the construction company.

The worker gave the resident an estimate of $1,600 for the driveway job and requested half of the money up front to buy materials, according to New Canaan Police Sgt. Carol Ogrinc. The man gave the worker a check for $800, but a couple of hours later, after the worker said he would not be using the construction company’s equipment, the man grew suspicious and asked for a refund.

The worker refused to give a refund because he said he had already bought the materials, Ogrinc said. The resident then called police.

No charges have been filed, but New Canaan Police know the identity of the worker, a 39-year-old Norwalk resident. Police did not release the worker's name. The incident may end up in civil court, Ogrinc said.
