New Canaan Police Officer Launches Gofundme Campaign For K-9 Program

NEW CANAAN, CONN. – The New Canaan Police Department is using a Gofundme campaign to raise $100,000 for its K-9 program, which is, it says, run solely on donations from the community.

New Canaan police Officer David Rivera, and K-9 Apollo, have worked together on narcotics and missing child cases. The police department is trying to raise $100,000 for a second police dog and its training and equipment.

Officer David Rivera, the department’s K-9 handler, said that about $47,000 has been raised so far in the campaign.

The money raised will go toward a new K-9, a Labrador retriever or a German shepherd, which will be trained in narcotics detection.

Donations, Rivera said, are also used for training and equipment for the K-9 program. They are urgently needed, he added, because there is a training course becoming available soon.

Rivera said that he, and K-9 Apollo, have been on the beat since last summer and have made numerous narcotics arrests.

They have also, he said, assisted in searching for missing children and adults.

The K-9 unit also provides aid to neighboring towns and cities, such as Fairfield, Norwalk, Stamford and Greenwich, Rivera said.

Having a second K-9 will help the police department make the community safer, he added.

Folks who donate $50 or more will receive a NCPD Proud Supporter K-9 Program bumper sticker.

The individual who donates the most will receive a private K-9 demo with several K-9 teams in the area.

Donations are tax deductible, Rivera said.

Donations can also be mailed to the New Canaan Police Department, Attn: Officer David Rivera, 174 South Avenue, New Canaan, Conn., 06840.

Rivera is asking donors to make the checks payable to: New Canaan Police Dept K-9 Fund.
