NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- An alert citizen's tip helped New Canaan Police nab a man suspected of trying to break into vehicles in town Monday afternoon, police said.
Police received a call at 2:30 p.m. about a man looking into vehicles and acting suspiciously in the area of Elm Street and Park Street.
Investigating officers located a man that matched the description of the suspicious person and identified him as Andrew Bilardo, 21, of Norwalk, police said.
An investigation determined that Bilardo intended to enter vehicles in the center of town and steal items from them, police said. Bilardo was also in possession of a stolen check that he had attempted to cash unsuccessfully at two local banks, police said.
Bilardo was charged with possession of burglary tools, fifth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny, third-degree attempt to commit burglary and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was held on $10,000 bond for a court appearance Tuesday.
Bilardo is also wanted by Norwalk Police on narcotics-related charges.
