NEW CANAAN, CONN. – The cause of a fire in a downtown building Monday night is under investigation, New Canaan Fire Chief Jack Hennessey said Tuesday.
Flames sparked in the unoccupied attic of 92 Main St. but were put out with the help of the building’s sprinkler system, Hennessey said.
A nail salon and the Kaahve coffee shop occupy the first floor of the building, on the Main Street side. Cava Wine Bar & Restaurant is located in the building's Forest Street side.
An office on the third floor of the red brick building was damaged by water flowing from the ceiling, he said.
Firefighters, after securing the scene, moved things around in the office to protect them from the dripping.
Power was turned off in the building because the wiring had gotten wet, Hennessey said.
Once electricians and the town’s building inspector gives them the thumbs-up, the building’s occupants can return, he added.
Main Street between East Avenue and Locust was temporarily closed to traffic while the fire scene was secured, the chief said.
