The Shelton Police Department was notified of a toddler left in an unoccupied toddler in a car with the windows closed at approximately 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5 at the Mohegan School.

Upon arrival at the school, officers found a Honda Civic with the windows closed and a 3-year-old girl alone in the backseat. While investigating, the girl’s mother, 30-year-old Laura Boyle, of Shelton, came out of the school and stated that she had left her daughter in the car for a short stretch while she brought her 5-year-old son into the school.

Police said that officers at the scene evaluated the school’s exterior surveillance cameras, which showed that Boyle arrived at the school and left her daughter in the car for approximately 10 minutes before checking on her. The video showed that she then left again for approximately 20 minutes before police arrived and she came to the car.

At the time of the investigation, it was 77 degrees outside, and hotter inside the car, police noted.

The girl was uninjured and released to her father. While investigating, officers discovered that Boyle’s vehicle was not registered, insured and her driver’s license was suspended.

Boyle was arrested and charged with risk of injury to a child, operation of a motor vehicle under suspension, operation of an unregistered motor vehicle and failure to have insurance. She was released on a 1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Derby Superior Court on Wednesday, June 19.
