The burglary took place in Westport on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2022, around 4:40 am, at the Riverside Sunoco, at 240 Riverside Drive.

According to Westport Police Lt. Eric Woods, an officer on routine patrol discovered a forced entry burglary.

A further investigation revealed that the glass in the front door was smashed, and entry was gained, Woods said.

Tobacco products appeared to be the target of the burglary as vaping devices and cigarettes were the majority of items stolen.

The total loss reported by the victim was approximately $3,600.

Woods said investigating detectives processed the scene to include DNA swabs of evidence left. In addition, a stolen vehicle believed to be used in the crime was recovered in Bridgeport two weeks later.

A search of that vehicle uncovered items stolen from the burglary. Using surveillance footage and DNA evidence, Thomas Moccaie, age 41, of Stratford, was developed as the suspect who allegedly committed the burglary, Woods said.

A warrant was issued and on Monday, May 1, Moccaie was arrested at Stamford Superior Court and charged with:

  • Burglary
  • Conspiracy to commit  burglary
  • Criminal mischief
  • Larceny

He was held on a court-set bond of $50,000.
